What is seed cycling?
Seed Cycling is used to assist in the balancing of sex hormones, oestrogen and progesterone as well as regulating the menstrual cycle. Oestrogen and progesterone require essential fatty acids and minerals for their structure and function. Specific seeds can provide the body with these essential fatty acids and minerals. Seed cycling involves rotating specific seeds throughout the phases of the cycle.
Day 1-7 Menstruation
Day 7-11 Follicular Phase
Day 11-14 Ovulation
Day 14-28 Luteal Phase
Day 1-14: Linseeds and Pepita Seeds
Linseeds are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, helping with inflammation which can contribute to pain before or during your period. Pepita seeds also contain essential fatty acids as well as zinc, which is vital for progesterone secretion and the regulation of androgen levels eg. Testosterone
Day 14-28: Sesame and Sunflower Seeds
Sesame seeds contain magnesium, zinc, calcium and selenium, these minerals are necessary for the detoxification and excretion of hormone metabolites. Sunflower seeds provide many minerals and contain essentials fatty acids that when processed in the body can ease pre-menstrual breast soreness.
It is recommended to consume a tablespoon of grinded seeds and add them to yoghurt, smoothies, curries, or avocado on toast etc. It is best to grind your own seeds as some are sensitive to light and temperature, particularly linseeds, which can cause the fatty acids within to oxidise and the anti-inflammatories properties to become pro-inflammatory. Ground seeds are best kept in an airtight container in the fridge.
Balancing hormones can take 3-4 cycles, allow time for any changes. Diet, lifestyle and other factors can also play a role.
This information is general, consultation with a nutritionist, naturopath or healthcare professional is recommended if you are experiencing PMS symptoms, irregular periods or suspected hormonal imbalances.
